![]() ![]() His swooning in the presence of his beloved OS might seem laughable or heartbreaking were it not so vitally present. Phoenix, who continually impresses with the range and depth of his characters (from “Walk the Line” and “The Master” to the upcoming “The Immigrant”), is at the top of his game in what is, for a majority of the picture, a solitary performance reacting to a disembodied voice. “Her” asks, how would a real form of AI engage with a person, and how might that AI (and the human) be altered by the experience?Īnd more importantly, perhaps: how might a human being differentiate between, say, a long-distance phone affair with someone they are never in physical contact with, and an affair with a virtual person, speaking through the same personal devices you’d use to call a loved one overseas? How do you share that relationship, if it is to be shared? Jonze, who wrote the script, was inspired years ago by now-ancient IM software that is programmed to engage the user with normal-seeming responses. And just as she has evolved, so, too (it appears) has Theodore. When Theodore is questioned about how he can engage in a relationship without real emotions, his response makes us understand that they are real, and are no less valid for being directed at a creation of technology, because Samantha has evolved into something more than a parroting program. ![]() It’s not all that unusual, evidently, in the future Los Angeles, where solitary humans not only appear to be constantly interacting with their devices, but they freely engage in all manner of relationships with operating systems they even cheat with other people’s OS’es. ![]() Samantha reaches the point where she is dissatisfied with not having a body, with not knowing what flesh feels like, but for much of their relationship, she and Theodore bond in a mutual exchange of understanding and tenderness that is entirely aural. And so the lonely Theodore pours out his heart to the understanding, insightful and funny Samantha, his newly-installed OS1 product, which absorbs not only information from the world, but sensations and intuitions, becoming more and more sentient. ![]()

![]() ![]() ![]() If you use them once a day, that’s 365 pieces of plastic per year you’re creating, when you could almost just as easily use floss and ditch the plastic. But they have one glaring problem: plastic waste. They come prestrung and make it easy to reach even the crevices as far back as your molars. After all, even small swaps can make a big difference when it comes to living more sustainably. If you’ve ever used floss picks, you know how great they are. ![]() If you're looking to cut down on your plastic use, ditching the disposable flossers for this reusable option is a good place to start. (And I've since found that I can usually tackle those areas with some targeted brushing.) I'm a little bummed that this pick doesn't have that, though, it's probably better for my gums in the long run since it saves them from unnecessary prodding. I've been using it for about a month and I only have had one real qualm so far: As a frequent popcorn eater, I appreciated the pointed end that you find on many flossers, as it's handy for getting out those kernels or other small pieces of food that get stuck along the gum line. The brand recommends rinsing the empty pick with water whenever you notice any buildup, but I like to do it after every use. The pods are made out of recyclable paper, too, to cut down on unnecessary plastic.Ĭleanliness is usually the biggest concern when it comes to these reusable products. It's also great for flossing emergencies since the carrying case can be slipped into your bag and has a mirror inside, for moments when you need to floss on the go.Īccording to the brand, the pick replaces 180 single-use flossers per refill and you can sign up to get the $5 refill pods sent to you every three months, so you never run out. And the floss is made with waxed polyester, so it easily slides between your teeth and feels gentle on the gums. The pick itself is super sturdy and has a thick handle, so you don't ever lose your grip when going for the hard-to-reach areas in the back of your mouth. It's as easy as that: The flosser will be strung and the dispenser will be ready to go for next time. To string the flosser, you press the Q logo on the bottom of the handle to open the pick, then clamp it shut on the floss in the dispenser and pull it to cut the thread. Thankfully, the refilling process is really simple. There's also a plastic case option that, while not quite as stylish, serves the same purpose and is $10 cheaper.įlossing already feels like such a hassle, so anything that makes it even slightly more complicated is immediately a no-go. And you can choose between five colors for the case, like Copper, Gold and Slate. It comes in a chic metal case that doubles as the storage vessel and dispenser. ![]() Just like Quip's super sleek toothbrushes, the pick makes flossing feel far more stylish than you ever imagined it could be. That's why, as a lover of sustainable swaps, when I saw that the internet-favorite oral care brand, Quip, had a reusable option, I knew I had to try it out. So, just like so many other single-use plastics, they likely end up piling up in landfills or in the environment when you toss them out. There aren't any specific stats on how flossers contribute to the ever-growing plastic problem, but they can't be recycled. Most flossers are made with plastic and since they're a one-and-done item, you end up tossing a lot of them over the course of a year. Unfortunately, as handy as they are, they're not great for the environment. Because unlike regular floss, which often cuts off the circulation in my fingers and requires a level of dexterity that I don't have, pre-threaded flossers are convenient and easy to use. And for me, floss picks have become that thing. So when you find something that makes flossing feel slightly less taxing and helps you actually keep up with the recommended daily routine, you stick to it. No matter how many times your dentist reminds you of the endless benefits of flossing (and yes, there really are many), the process never seems to get any more appealing. ![]() ![]() ![]() Now that both devices are recognized, you’ll be able to operate your phone by using the mouse or trackpad on your Mac. If the image gets pixelated, it’s most likely a raster file. You can see if an image is a vector by checking for a vector file extension like those listed above. Another method is to resize the image. Raster vs. vector files: frequently asked questions. You can open and edit vector files in Adobe Illustrator. Learn more about some of the common ones: Your software will usually determine your file type, whether it’s raster or vector. There are multiple types and extensions of both raster and vector files, each with its own features. You can open raster files in many different apps and web browsers, making them easy to view, edit and share. Vector files aren’t as accessible - many vector file types require specialised software to open and edit the files. Though it can present some challenges, it’s possible to convert vector files to raster or raster files to vector when needed. Vector files are much more lightweight than raster files, containing only the mathematical formulas that determine the design. Their large size can impact device storage space and slow down page loading speeds on the web. However, you can compress raster files for storage and web optimisation to make sharing faster and easier. Raster files are generally larger than vector files. They can contain millions of pixels and incredibly high levels of detail. For example, a brochure may use vector graphics for the company logo but raster files for photography. Some projects combine both raster and vector images. Vector files work better for digital illustrations, complex graphics, and logos. That’s because the resolution of vectors remains the same when resized, making them suitable for a wide variety of printed formats. Many digital cameras automatically shoot and save photos as raster files - and the images you see online are often rasters, too. Raster files are also commonly used for editing images, photos, and graphics. With vector image files, resolution is not an issue. You can resize, rescale, and reshape vectors infinitely without losing any image quality. Vector files are popular for images that need to appear in a wide variety of sizes, like a logo that needs to fit on both a business card and a billboard.ĭigital photographs are usually raster files. Raster files display a wider array of colours, permit greater colour editing, and show finer light and shading than vectors - but they lose image quality when resized. An easy way to tell if an image is raster or vector is to increase its size. If the image becomes blurred or pixelated, it’s most likely a raster file. The resolution of a raster file is referred to in DPI (dots per inch) or PPI (pixels per inch). If you zoom in or expand the size of a raster image, you start to see the individual pixels. One of the main differences between raster and vector files is their resolution. They represent images in very different ways, so there’s a lot to consider when deciding which one to use. Some of the main differences between raster and vector include: ![]() Raster and vector files are the two most popular formats used for visual content. ![]() What is the difference between raster and vector files? Vector files use mathematical equations, lines and curves with fixed points on a grid to produce an image. There are no pixels in a vector file. A vector file’s mathematical formulas capture shape, border, and fill colour to build an image. Because the mathematical formula recalibrates to any size, you can scale a vector image up or down without affecting its quality. Raster files are images built from pixels - tiny colour squares that, in great quantity, can form highly detailed images such as photographs. The more pixels an image has, the higher quality it will be, and vice versa. The number of pixels in an image depends on the file type (for example, JPEG, GIF, or PNG). |
